Scene 24

Scene 24

THE TIME BEFORE THE KIDS’ DEATH. MARIE IS ILL. CHRIS PUTS AN ORAL THERMOMETER INTO HER MOUTH.

Chris:Does that hurt?

Marie:Mmm-mmm.

Chris:That?

Marie:Mmm-yeah.

Chris:How about that? I’m gonna keep doing this till you tickle. Hm… You’ve got a fever. It’s going down, though.

Marie:Don’t you have to go somewhere?

Chris:Wanna play chess? I could teach you.

Marie:You could teach me that?

Scene 25

CHRIS WAKES UP IN THE DREAM HOUSE.

Leona: Excuse me. Aaah… Albert has to work. He asked me to meet with you. Will that be all right?

CHRIS LOOKS AT HER BADGE “LEONA”.

Chris:Leona? That’s a very beautiful name.

Leona(smiling): He said you’ve been isolated. Do you wanna see others? Perhaps the city?

Chris:I would, but travel makes me nauseous.

Leona: Close your eyes. I didn’t mean forever.

CHRIS OPENS HIS EYES AND SEES A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND. THEY’RE VERY HAPPY.

Leona: What do you think?

Chris:I’m a little under-dressed.

Leona: You look fine. Until now you’ve been painting your own world. This is mine. In our city across the river we have to have a common vision.

Chris:So… There’s work.

Leona: Uhm.

Chris:I like that.

Leona: Albert, for example, assort of a missionary. Saving lost souls.

Chris:Like me.

Leona: Hardly. They’re the ones who can’t get here.

Chris:You mean – from hell?

Leona: In a way. It’s not what you think. My work is with animals. Katie’s an old friend.

Scene 26

ANNIE IS WRITING.

(Annie’s inner voice:Dearest Christy. I don’t know how this day unraveled on me. I was so proud of how I held together through this endless afternoon. But coming home I began to lose it. If I had walked out that night for our Double D, you wouldn’t have been in the tunnel doing me a favour. The whole family lost in car crashes. Enough to make a person buy a bike.)
